A shooting near the University of Iowa in Iowa City has left multiple people injured in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, prompting an ongoing police investigation.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 1:45–1:46 a.m. in the downtown area near the Pedestrian Mall, where officers were responding to reports of a large fight involving dozens of individuals. As police arrived on the scene, gunfire erupted, leading to chaos as crowds fled the area.
Victims and Injuries
Officials confirmed that five people were shot, including three students from the university. One victim is reported to be in critical condition, while the others are in stable condition.
All victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not indicated that the victims were specifically targeted.
